Limbo

Well thats the Grayling season officially over in the UK and although some parts of the Country have started the Brown Trout season we here in North Yorkshire have another week to go so we are in Limbo land right now.

Honestly looking out the window as I update the blog Im very glad to be indoors as the Beast from the East has returned for a 2nd helping with minus temperatures, strong freezing winds and heavy snow flurries, definitely the time to be indoors. Not to be wasted I volunteered my services to help a few guys who want to learn spider fishing & improve their dry fly fishing so they were on the lookout for some Furled Leaders so instead of buying them I made a donation of 8 for them.

Setting up the Jig this afternoon was a change from the usual saturday afternoon tasks.

First two off the Jig

Getting back in the swing it didn't take too long to make 6 normal 5ft dry fly furled leaders with another two sighter leaders to show them the difference.

A few tyings that I have also been getting on with over the last day or so.

All ready for when the Grannom appear on the water.

and a few nymphs using a new material for me ultra lace, I seen this online and thought that coloured wire through the centre would make something different so started experimenting with the few wires I had lying around my tying desk.

The camera never really picked the wire up the way it looks in real life, yellow lace with red wire through it looks like veins running through the nymph body and the red had some copper wire through it.

Im sure it will look good with some other colours which I have on order so the experimenting will continue.

Finally a couple of spiders I copied from the clipping of a book that a work colleague passed to me, and with a little detective work I found out the book to be The Practical Angler written in 1856 by W.C Stewart of Edinburgh. The later version of the book is now freely available to read online which I have been doing during my lunch hour from work, and I can highly recommend reading it. Simply click the following text... Practical Angler

To everyone wherever you are I wish you tight lines for the Brown Trout season.

Next week is my local fishing club AGM & workparty up the Dale followed by our normal pre season dinner which is always an enjoyable day so a few pictures from that at the very least next week.

  1. George the weather here has not been ideal to wet the line. Cold and very windy. With some moderating in the next days it may be enough for me to have at it again.

Love the leaders, and those lovely green caddis are eye, and fish catching for sure.

    1. Thanks Alan, Many roads closed here currently with drifting snow, so definitely not venturing out, another day of furled leader making for the AGM next week as they always disappear like hotcakes & the money always goes to a charity.

Been too cold up here to fish yet, for me anyway, roll on a warm southern breeze.

  3. The pre-season dinner seems like a great tradition. If I just could stand the larger groups better I'd love that sort of celebration. I'm walking the babks here. Water hasn't hit forty yet. Snow and sleet on the weekend. Round three for you is late next week, early the following.

Every hour is closer to spring. Every hour.
