Eincy Weency Spiders

A few years ago I had a bit of a side bet with a friend to pick out half a dozen flies and use them for the full season and nothing else which we did and we both had some fun in the process, and to be honest we caught all through the season using just the half dozen chosen flies.
Last season I made the fatal mistake of throwing a few more fly boxes into my jacket and to be honest most of the contents of them never seen the water, so this year I'm cutting right back and only taking the flies I have chosen from the previous season's diaries. To be honest the more flies you take the greater headache it can become, especially when your not catching.

I sat down a few night ago and flicked back through my previous seasons diaries and 3 flies that kept grabbing my attention were the spider patterns and the ones that accounted for the most fish over the past seasons and will certainly make this years box were:

The Partridge & Orange

 The Partridge & Yellow

                                                                                                       The Waterhen Bloa.

So tonight I had a night in with the spiders and sat and made up a half dozen of each pattern for this years box, my fly tying is by no means professional & could be ripped to bits by others, but the trout dont seem to mind and I enjoy the sheer pleasure of tying then catching using what I've tied.

    1. Bruce, Nice to see you mate, I wouldnt go anywhere without a Black Spider in my Box, an all time classic with the Clyde and accounted for a few Yorkshire fish, the 3 above have accounted for the most so was just topping up the box again. We definitely need to get out together this year, there's a wee stream with a pub beside it I know....lol

  2. Snipe & purple must be among the best of the traditional patterns (especially when tied with a turn or two of peacock herl behind the hackle)?

    1. I've seen them tied that way with the herl tied behind the hackle, you cannot beat the old patterns and the variations they are timeless.

    2. All my Spiders, even traditional pattern, have been much more effective with a tiny butt of holographic tinsel.
      Nidd.
