Ancient, The Past & Present

After hearing the weather forecast for last night  and today, yesterday afternoon I thought I'd better take my chances and get out for a few hours as the prospects for today were not looking good with predicted high winds and heavy rain, not forgetting the rain up on the Pennines all night which turned out to be totally true with the river rising to from 0.61m at 1800hrs last night to 1.42m at 0530hrs this morning, making it totally unfishable

I made a decision and got to a local river just after 1pm and it was up & coloured but still fishable at this point, no movement from any fish so got started on the wet flies.

Ready for the Off.
On my way upstream I came across this new sculpture which I instantly liked, An Ancient soldier, a soldier from the 2nd World War & a Soldier from present, (No smart Comments on my Service) Its nice to see a community backing the forces in this way that they honour them with a piece of art.

Through the Ages

Getting closer on the bench I seen a disc describing why the sculptures had been put in place.
Plaque on the bench
Fishing upstream I seen what I thought was the beginning of a hatch and a few olives coming down, but alas it was very sporadic and never amounted to anything. Carrying on upstream I got my first take of the day a small grayling which was released in the water and it had taken one of my red spider variants that I had tied up during the week so I was pleased.

Red Spider Variant

A few casts more and another grayling to the Red Spider which was released at long distance. I got to a point in the river I could not carry on without crossing over & the river at this time was too strong a current so without taking any chances I fished it back down the side I had came and before long a 3rd grayling had succumb to my spiders this time a partridge variant I had tied up.

Partridge Variant
This time the Grayling was substantially bigger than the other two as she was full of eggs so released in the water without  netting & off she swam to where she came to hopefully produce sport for the future. Still no Brown Trout to start the season but I'm not complaining the season is still young yet.

    1. Ah, a Plank! I was a Blanket Stacker after transferring in from the Light Infantry to become a Rocket Doctor (Ammunition Technical Officer). Doing proof firings with the artillery was always great fun. Superb hospitality and finally we got to play with big boy's toys rather than just learning about them. Did you read over on my blog that 14 year old Dominic is sitting his exams on Saturday to enter the junior division of a military academy in Portugal? If he had to choose a military career, I had always hoped he'd have the sense to join the RAF. He still faces National Service in the Angolan Armed Forces when he is eighteen, Gulp.
